Chapter Seven

The ancient vampire decided to make his way to Europe. Even though he’d decided on a completely unpredictable approach to bringing his ordeal to an end, he felt it would be wise to take some backup with him when he went to confront Josiah Reign this time. He flew to Pompeii and then walked to Naples. On the way, he was met by a few old friends.

As he approached the Piazza Garibaldi, he saw Augustine and Constantine step out from beside a building and walk toward him across the piazza. Mary was there as well. She stood in the shadow of a tree, watching the three men greet each other before she walked out to join them.

“It is so good to see you, my old friends,” the weary vampire said. They could all hear the weariness in his voice.

“My oldest friend,” Mary said softly. She never seemed to speak much above a whisper. “You sound tormented and at the end of your rope again… no pun intended.” A soft murmur arose between the other two men over the comment, which they must have felt to be in poor taste.

“It’s alright, sister,” he reassured her. “To be quite honest, I am. But before I share the point of this journey, perhaps our last journey, is there anywhere to find a legal meal around here? A clean one please, no prostitutes.”

Constantine raised an eyebrow. It seemed their friend had either become rather finicky in his third millennia or he’d had a recent religious illumination. Augustine had a feeling it was the latter. He sensed Judas was close to repentance, though he couldn’t figure out how the dynamics of that scenario would work out. The odds were stacked against him. But that was not a discussion they needed to be having at that moment.

“You never cared much for carnal pleasures anyway,” Augustine replied.

He shook his head in mock disbelief. “This coming from the monk!”

Constantine led the way to a local restaurant run by a Mani couple. Up front they served the usual Tandra fare, served by a neatly attired wait staff who catered to all kinds. But in the back, there were several other waitresses and waiters of a different kind. Small groups of Tandra worked a set of tables either serving donated blood in glasses and bowls or offering their wrists for blood eaters to feed from. Of course, besides the price of the meal, tips were greatly encouraged.
